Paste suddenly disabled, works outside Word

Suddenly, the paste function is not working in Word 2007. Ctrl-V does
nothing and the Paste button in the Clipboard section of the ribbon is
greyed out. I can copy and paste in other apps (like WordPad), but not
Word. As far as I know, I haven't changed any settings.

Can anyone suggest a fix? And what to avoid in the future?
