Pasting cyrillic into Japanese Word

1. Use the Language Register to set the English version of Word 2004 to
handle Japanese.
2. Copy Russian text from outside Word, for example from
http://ru.wikipedia.org/ .
3. Paste it into Word.

At least on my machine the text is now "full width", taking up about
twice as much space as needed. This probably is because Word has decided
that this is Asiatic text. I cannot change the font manually, and not
even Tools > Language lets me define the text as Russian.

Does anyone know a trick to paste Cyrillic text with the correct
character width?

I know I can use the Language Register to switch back to English, but
that is troublesome, when you want to mix Russian and Japanese text
features.

Haven't a clue. Don't know how the Japanese version works.

You might try selecting a few empty lines, setting them to Russian first
(Tools | Language, I assume, at least in English versions), then pasting the
text into those paragraphs pre-set to Russian text.

Also, there are a lot of different ways to paste. The Edit | Paste Special
options, plus Word 2004 offers "match destination formatting" and "keep text
only" off the paste options clipboard that appears on paste.

Also, different browsers put different stuff on the clipboard--for instance,
people have gotten different results pasting images from Safari than pasting
images from Firefox. Don't know if the same applies to text.

Experiment a bit with different ways of pasting. Also check whether using
TextEdit as an intermediary helps at all.

Sorry to only have guesses to offer. You might look for a Japanese-language
community of Mac users to see if anyone has suggestions.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate guesses, even when they don't work.
Most of what you suggested doesn't work: paste special, go through an
intermediare application, setting to Russian first - no help.

However, you struck gold with "match destination formating"! I always
thought that was another word for "paste special", but it turns out it
does something different. Splendid!

Thanks!

Amazing. I would have thought that setting would produce exactly the
opposite of a fix in this case (though it's generally my best default), but
glad it helped. :) good to know.

Although I am not sure which browser you are using, here are some more ways
of getting the desired character width:

Using Safari,
- copy Russian text
- Edit | Paste Special as "Unformatted text"
- using Paste Recovery Smart Button, select "Keep Text Only" (or "Match
Destination Formatting" as mentioned by Daiya)

Hope this helps!
