I pasted into a document at a point after which there is a paragraph mark.
When I pasted, the paragraph mark following the paragraph where I pasted was
eliminated.

This was for Word 2007, though I evidently shouldn't have made this as a
general suggestion.

Did the 'chunk that you were pasting include a paragraph mark? Did the
formatting behave as per the defaults you have set (i.e. 'keep source' or
'keep destination' formatting depending on your settings)?

The chunk I pasted included a paragraph mark, and I pasted over a paragraph
including a paragraph mark. I have keep source selected, but that should not
affect the paragraph mark FOLLOWING the paragraph that I'm pasting into.

I just now tried pasting a table over where another table was. The table was
inserted, but a blank column was inserted to the left. There was no blank
column in either the pasted table or the table that I pasted over.
