pasting excel chart into word

hi there

apologies if i have already posted this query: i am new to all of this.

when i go to paste an emebedded excel graph into word the font style and
formatting changes. the word document tells me that the font is size12 times
new roman, but it is not. the characters warp and the spacing between
characters is not right. when i double click on the pasted graph in word to
edit it (and it goes back into excel mode) the font looks perfect and thus,
there is nothing to edit. however, as soon as i go back into word view,
everything goes awry again.

i was having this problem in office 2002 and so i have just installed 2003
and the problem is still there. i also tried importing the embedded graph
into powerpoint, and the same problem happened there.

please help me.

I would check a couple of things: is the embedded Excel object scaled in
any way? Proportionally or not?

If you can live without the OLE, then insert as a picture (WMF/EMF).
That usually brings better results.

A couple of years ago, I've started to setup all Excel Charts in a
separate Graph sheet in Excel (you can select that in the last step of
the Chart wizard), and when copying that whole sheet (and as a picture)
into Word, the outcome is more predictable.

thankyou for your advice. unfortunately, it is no help. i unchecked the
autoscaling with no result. as i am only using pie graphs, there are no axis
scales to turn off. as for pasting as a wmf or emf, it doesnt work properly
either. i also tried the setup

What does not work with the picture insertion through Paste Special?

in separate Graph sheets, but to no avail. i am so close to giving up--i
am thinking about wiping my whole hard drive and restoring, hopefully erasing
this problem in the process! it sounds drastic i know, but this is for my
phd and i am really getting stressed out. the office techs and it help
people at uni have done all they can and i am still stuck. this message
board is my last hope. any other ideas before i do something drastic?

I would advice you to test on a different machine first. If the problem
goes away (I cannot really imagine what it would be), then and only then
a new clean Office installation might indeed help.

OK, the only things I can think of: making sure that all Office SPs are
applied, and that the font used in Excel is actually installed on the
system.

Other than that, I couldn't say whether there are other methods left
besides a clean wipe. :-(

what are office SPS and how do i make sure they are applied?

Service Packs (and patches, etc.). Go to http://office.microsoft.com |
Downloads | Office-Update and let the system tell you whether your
Office installation is up to date on patches etc.

how do i check
that the font used in excel is installed on the system?

I presume you are using one flavor of Windows: look in your Fonts folder
in Start | Control Panel

Hi flameboy77 and Robert

Try these two things:

1. In Excel, don't just click the chart so you see little squares around it.
Instead, hold down control and click it, so you see little circles. Then
paste into Word using Edit > Paste Special and paste as a picture. I find
that if I do this, Word will paste in the chart at the same size as it
appeared in Excel, and with text that behaves 99% of the time.

2. Make sure you're using a standard resolution for your monitor, and that
you are not using large fonts in Windows. I've found that both can upset the
display of text in Excel charts.
