"Patch is invalid" when launching Word.

I re-installed my Office 2000 SR-1 Professional and subsequently all my
office tools will not open. The error message is: This patch package could
not be opened. Verify that this patch package exists and that you can open it
or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows
installer patch package. Sometimes the error is slightly different: Patch is
invalid. Check if patch exists and/or accurate (my words at end).
I've tried all the Office and XP update and help pages I can find. When I
run an XP query it tells me that I have all the updates and, consequently, I
can't find where this patch update problem is. I've spend hours/days trying
to fix this.
