Patch Package Can't be Opened

I'm running Office 2000 on Windows XP home. I've got a
damaged install of O2k, but I can't repair or remove O2k
because I get the error message:

The patch package cannot be opened. etc.

There is a Knowledgebase Article that talks about this
problem and suggests it happens when old versions of
Office leave pieces in the registry. It talks about a
Windows Installer CleanUp utility, but this utility
cannot be run under XP. The Knowledgebase Article doesn't
provide any clues as to what to do under XP.

Can anyone provide any suggestions? Thanks.
