patch package could not be opened??

I had Office XP home edition on a system using ME.
I decided to go to XP and went with the upgrade,
installation went great but when I went to open any office
xp files I got an error, so I uninstalled office xp and
loaded office 2000 Pro. At this point I opened files in
2000 but could still get the office xp interface. Then I
tried run office xp setup which gave me this error:

patch package could not be opened. Contact the application
vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer
patch package.

any ideas?

This can be caused by several things, but to correct it you will need
to zap the Windows Installer entry in the Registry and reinstall
Office.

Obtain the following utility and use it to remove only the reference
to Office. Once that is complete then you'll need to reinstall Office
to point the Windows Installer to your installation CD:

MS Installer Cleanup utility for Office XP:

When I opened Windows Installer all I was able to see was
Adobe Reader? I didn't have the option to uninstall
anything else, am I looking in the wrong place?

All help appreciated

Hmmm... I think I may have misread your post - sorry!

I suspect the Office XP upgrade is looking for the Office 2000 *.msi
file and it is missing. Try the Installer Clean-up utility for Office
2000 instead:

Remove the reference to Office 2000 and reinstall Office 2000 so the
Installer entries are recreated. Then try installing Office XP.
