Patching a 2003 administrative install

I have extracted the .msp files from the Office 2003 sp1 executable and I'm
trying to patch my administrative install point.
I'm using the following syntax to apply the update
msiexec /p [path\name of MSP file] /a [path\name of MSI file] when i try to
apply It the msiexec help appears giving me options for the switches. I have
noticed that the msiexec version is now version 3. I dont see the /p switch
listed i do see an /update switch for msp files.

What am i doing wrong
