Path & File name and Page No. not showing- toggle field codes

Please help, I can not figure this out and it is driving me crazy!

Previously my auto text has worked fine, I use it everyday. Yesterday I
went to insert the path/filename at the bottom of my document using the Auto
Text toolbar---> Header/Footer --> File Name and Path. Insead of the file
name it shows {FILENAME\p}. The same thing happens when I try to insert page
number in a header; it inserts {PAGE} instead of the number. I can "fix" it
by right clicking and selecting "toggle field codes" but I have to do this
everytime with every document each time it is opened. What is happening and
how can I fix this?

You have View FieldCodes enabled. Go to Tools, Options, View tab and clear
the check box against View FieldCodes.
