pattern fill effects printing smaller than screen size

I am using a Dell Dimension 8300 computer, Office 2003XP
Pro and an HP deskjet5650 printer.
If I use Pattern fill effects in Word (or Publisher) they
are printing out at half the size they appear on
screen,ie. a squared pattern has 9 squares per inch on
screen and prints out 18.
The same file printed out in Windows 98 prints OK.
Can anyone please suggest a solution before I SCREAM.
