Pause slideshow, showing status

Keboard shortcuts "s" or the Pause key both work to pause a full-screen
slide show (docs in PPT should say PAUSE instead of stop .. ).
How do you display the PAUSED status? That is not shown by default and is
rather confusing. I only want to display paused status (no other status
messages ).
