Pc doesn,t recognise wireless adapter but notebook does both xp

My notebook has a wifi connection to the internet, I tried to connect my
desktop by using a Belkin wireless adapter but it does not even detect
additional hardware when the adapter is plugged in. The adapter is recognised
when I plug into the notebook. Both pc's xp.
