pc freezes

L

Larry Flink

I have a pc with Word 6.0 on it. I just upgraded from
Windows 98se to Windows XP Home Edition. When I try to
open Word or a Word document the word window comes up and
then the little hour glass just sits there vibrating and
the system is locked up and must be rebooted.

Any help will be appreciated.

P.S. All other apps i.e. Excel, Powerpoint work fine

For general issues starting Word, see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm. Since this is
Word 6.0, however, it's possible that Word is looking for Share.exe.
Unfortunately, all the KB articles that explained how to solve this problem
have been retired. Luckily, I've saved text from a couple of them:

Some programs look for a file named Share.exe in either the root folder or
the DOS folder. This file can be a zero-byte file created with a text editor
(such as Notepad). Other programs may simply look for the string "share" in
the Autoexec.bat file.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click
Notepad.
2. On the File menu in Notepad, click Save As.
3. In the Save In box, click the C: drive. This saves the file to the
root folder on your computer.
4. In the File Name box, type "share.exe" (with the quotation marks), and
then click Save. NOTE: On Windows ME, save a copy to the C: drive and to the
\Windows\System folder.
5. Quit Notepad.
6. Restart your computer.
7. Run the Works Setup program again. [This would need to be made more
general.]

Note: Do not add a reference to Share.exe in the Autoexec.bat file on your
computer. The empty Share.exe file cannot be run when you start the
computer.

If you continue to receive the error message, copy the Share.exe file to the
Windows\Command folder on your computer.

For information about how to copy files, click Start, and then click Help.
On the Index tab, type "copying files" (without quotation marks), and then
double-click the Copying Files, Folders Help topic.
