PC to PC Install

My desktop is not recognizing my cdrom or dvd drives. My laptop is working
fine. Is there a way to put my desktop xp pro cd in my laptop and install
the files onto my desktop to repair or reinstall xp pro? I am not a computer
pro but not an idiot either. I have tried copying the cd to zip drive but
encountered a problem with files that wouldn't copy (only got shortcut
files). Did I do something wrong here? Any help would be greatly
appreciated. I have tried numerous fixes for getting my desktop to recognize
my cd/dvd drives, all to no avail.

I would shut down the computer and then open it up and make sure your IDE
cables (or SATA cables if using SATA drives) are well seated on both ends.
Then, boot the computer to the BIOS and go to the drive configuration and see
if it lists your CD drives with the hard drives. If not, you might actually
have a bad motherboard.
