.pcx Graphic files

In previous versions of Word/Office you could import .pcx files. It appears
in Office XP that this file format is no longer supported. Any ideas on how
to incorporate this file type?

Hi Jon,

As I understand it you can use PCX files through Insert=>Picture
if you have a copy of the old graphics filter available on your
PC (PCXImp32.FLT) in the
\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\GRPHFLT\ folder

You can extract it from your prior Office version and copy it to
that folder then in Word use Tools=>Options=>General
[x] Confirm Conversions at Open
to help activate it on first use.

'Use as is' applies to success in this case.

Bob, I tried what you suggested, but it didn't work. I still can't open the
pcx file and it still doesn't let me "add" the converter to anything (either
the list of availalbe formats or anywhere else I've seen). When you tried to
insert the pcx file the first time, did it come up and ask you to choose a
converter that was not in the original list or something?

Thanks.

Hi Bryan,

Hmmm.

Are you sure the filter was in that folder before
you started Word and you had the confirm conversion turned on?

If you set the Insert=>Picture=>From File view and choose the
'preview' view and select a PCX graphic do you see the preview?

Have you restarted the PC?

If you run Regedit from Start=>Run and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Graphics Filters\Import\
is there a \PCX 'folder' ?

Who was the PCX filter removed from Office 2003 in the first place ? Why
should users have to go through all this hassle ? PCX was a very commonly
used graphics format and indeed Microsoft encouraged its use by saying in
Help how efficient it was. Now it has been dropped from the list of available
filters without so much as a by your leave. Tyoical Microsoft, acting
unilaterally without thinking about the Customer.

I am having the same problem with PCX files.
I did what you said and added it to the registry (I copied the entry from a
registry running Office 2000) and now it shows the PCX files and when I
select PC Paintbrush as the format, it says it had an error converting the
file.
Do I need to re-boot the PC? It found the registry entry OK.
My temporary solution is to create the document on Office 2000 and then I
can use it with Office 2003. Not good, but it wortks.
