Hi Chester,

Office 2003 no longer includes support for PCX graphics files.
There have been mixed results on folks copying the PCXIM32.flt
from an older version of Office into the Filters folder and
using it with Office 2003. It may depend on whether or not
a previous version of Office was installed on the same machine.

Dear Bob,
I have found and copied PCXIMP32.FLT to the directory with
all the other .flt files. It does not (thus far) allow me to convert .pcx
files. Do I have to tell Word that it is there somehow please?

Would it be all right to put word 97 on all the machines I have upgraded and
got OEM office SBE on? Would that licence cover it if I am not using the new
SBE at all? ALL of my graphics are PCX.

What is the time scale for removing support for other graphics types?

The folder in question should be C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\Grphflt
If this filter doesn't work when placed there, it would make more sense to
convert the images to a usable format - eg
http://www.gold-software.com/abc.shtml?about20PC.
Microsoft changed its filters for security reasons a while back and while
some of the old filters appear to still work, others don't. I have not
personally tried this one.

Dear Graham,
That looks as though it will work well. It is an
expensive and time-consuming solution (Australian dollar . . . !) but it is
either that or go back to word 97. Still, that did everything I need, and
may be the way to go. I'll wait on Bob's advice re the licensing.

Yes, I had put the file PCXIMP32.FLT in the right directory. Should Word
look for it there with no further settings within Word or the registry?

Hi Chester,

In Tools=>Options=>General did you turn on the
option to [x] Confirm Conversions at Open
prior to using Insert=>Picture?

Thanks, Bob: I put that in, and now every time I import a .rtf file it asks
me if I wish to convert it. Made no difference to the graphics though.

What should I try next?

The PCXIMP32.FLT came from a word 97 system. Should I try to locate a newer
one?

Bob & Graham: I tried another version of PCXIMP32.flt, and it still does not
work.
The first was created 1.8.97 (57,344 bytes) from a word 97 system.
The second was created 11.12.99 (81,920 bytes) version 99.12.8.0 from a word
2000 system.
Neither worked.
Interestingly, now that I set the "confirm before conversion" option, none
of the options is a PCX import conversion.

From what I can see, Windows Explorer doesn't display PCX files either, so I
guess conversion to another format may have to be the way forward, unless
Bob has a plan. There was a magazine cover disc freeby of a simpler version
of Advanced Batch Converter kicking around a while back. If you contact me
via my web site link I could probably put the two of you together :)

Dear Bob, Graham and all,

YIPPEE!! It works! Bob, no
attachment came through, but I went into the registry and put in similar
entries to the others in the Import key (changing the names to protect the
innocent ...) and it not works happily.

Many thanks for your help Bob, and for your interest Graham!
