PDF attachments don't open in Outlook..they open in a pdf reader such as
Adobe or Foxit.

I get a File Conversion window asking me to select encoding that makes your
document readable. Choices are Windows (Default), MS-DOS, and Other.
Selecting any of these the document just comes up w/ jibberish.

It should open with Adobe Reader if you have it installed on your PC. Adobe
Reader is the most common PDF reader, Foxit is another alternative. Are
either installed on your PC? If one or the other are, did they ever work?

Perhaps they have simply lost their file association. Open Windows Explorer
and click on Tools > Folder Options > File Types and make the PDF
association with Adobe Reader or Foxit there.

I do have Adobe installed but I don't know if Adobe Premiere Elements 4 and
Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 have been reinstalled. Had to wipe out everything
and reinstall the OS, Microsoft, etc. Let me give this a shot and see how it
goes. Everything used to work just fine prior to my meltdown. Your
suggestion of going to Tools > Folder Options doesn't seem to work because
there is no 'Folder Option on under Tools. Also going into Control Panel I
can get Folder Options but no File Type option. Will try to reinstall the
other Adobe features that I may have not done the other day. Will keep you
posted. Thanks.

How then can I change the setting so that Adobe will open the pdf attachment?

Save a .pdf attachment to a file on your hard disk, or find one that is
already there. Right-click on the file and select to Open With.
Navigate to the program that you want to handle PDF files. Remember to
check the box to remember your selection.
