It depends on what version of the system you are running. Since I see
you posted from a MacOS X machine I assume that's what you have. You can
try dragging the file to the Preview application.
You can also download the Adobe Reader from
http://www.adobe.com/
To make sure all your PDF files open automatically when you double-click
them, you can select one of them in the Finder, press command-i and
select Preview (or reader depending on what you want) in the Open
With... pull down, then you click on apply to all.
This will properly map .pdf files to the application you choose.
