PDF previewer borken :-(

Hi all,

I have run into a problem I cannot seem to fix. I send and receive a
number of PDF files all the time. The previewer available in Outlook
has been extremely useful for providing a glance at a just-received
PDF documents without having to open them completely in Acrobat.

When I attempt to preview a PDF in Outlook now, here is the message I
see in the Outlook reading window:

"This file cannot be previewed because of an error with the following
previewer:

PDF Previewer Handler for Vista

To open this file in its own program, double-click it."

I have attempted uninstalling/reinstalling the whole Office suite, as
well as my Adobe CS4 Suite to no avail.

I am running Vista 64 Home Premium, Office 2007 Ultimate with all
patches and updates applied, and Adobe Production Premium CS4 Suite
with Acrobat 9.1.2 Pro (all updates applied).

Can anyone suggest a way to repair the PDF Preview Handler? I miss it!
:)

Thanks in advance,
Mike F

Yes Diane, this is on 64-bit Vista.

Thanks for the link to foxit. I will give it a shot. The commentary on
the foxit page mentions in passing that Adobe installs its own
previewer. If this is the case, then perhaps it's not Outlook that's
broken on my system, but something to do with the Adobe Acrobat
installation. I have tried re-installing Acrobat (as well as the
entire CS4 suite -- a VERY time-consuming job!), but the problem
stubbornly persists.

Follow-up:

I just found this thread in Adobe support. Apparently this is a common
glitch with 64-bit systems. (Incidentally, the previewer on my 32-bit
Vista laptop works fine!)

Incidentally, Adobe seems to be having some other issues working the
kinks out of their 64-bit suites as well -- the 64-bit program updates
have been a real problem, and frequently still fail to install
correctly.

Meanwhile, the foxit previewer works like a charm! Thanks for the tip,
Diane!

Correct -there are issues with the 64bit os with previewers. There were
problems with flash and a bunch of other things which limited what you
could do on the 64x os. (None of my tablet pc utilities worked so I had to
revert to 32 bit... flash didn't work in the 64bit browser and I swear every
bank site I use required flash.)

I had the same problem. I'm running Win7RC1b7100 x64 with Office
2010TechPreview (x64), and it broke my PDF previewing. So, I tried the
reader standalone (despite having Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro), and nothing. Same
with Foxit & SumatraPDF. Then, I turned to Lifehacker, and they recommend
(along with the other two) PDF-XChange Viewer (freeware, as always), and it
works like a charm! And it has either a same or better feature set compared
with the other two mentioned, and no nags or watermarks like Foxit now has.
If you're not able to resolve your problem, I suggest giving that a go!
