Hi Folks

Hoping someone out there can put me out of my misery for the last couple of years I've been using a Mac Book version 10.4.11 with Entourage version 11.4.0 installed on it. It has worked fine up until a month ago when I've started to experience a problem opening pdf files that have been sent to my email account as an attachment. When I go to open the attached pdf within entourage I receive the following error message 'File Error, Could not open file'.

I am able to save the attached pdf file to my desktop but when I then go to open it from the desktop I receive the same error message as above.

I'm at a loss as other then the usual mac, office etc updates I haven't changed anything on the computer.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Dan

I am able to save the attached pdf file to my desktop but when I then go to
open it from the desktop I receive the same error message as above.

Then the problem is with the Mac OS, not Entourage.

What program are you using to open PDF files? If Preview, try
downloading Acrobat Reader. Get Info on one of the files, go to the
Open With section, change it to Reader and click the Change All button.
See if you have the same problem.

Hi Adam

Many thanks for the reply how do I Get Info one of the files to then allow me to change the Open With Section?

Hi Adam

Sorry, have sussed how to change the open with section and Acrobat is installed but I'm now getting the following error message when trying to open a pdf file 'There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired'.

Any ideas?

Hi Dan,

the PDF attachments might not have been downloaded completely. Go to
Tools>Accounts, double-click your account, switch to the Options tab and see
if the option "Partially receive messages over" is checked. If it is, turn
it off, and this behaviour should stop.

Have you also noticed a similar behaviour with other file types (especially
larger documents, above several MB)?

Thanks for the help but I'm afraid it hasn't solved the problem, I'm still
getting the same error message. The 'partially received messages over' was
checked so I turned it off, as it happens the pdf file that I'm trying to
open is only 16k and I haven't had any problems downloading large jpegs that
have been sent as attachments to emails via entourage.

Any other ideas?

Cheers

Hi Dan,

does this happen will every single PDF file? Do the PDF files have anything
in common, such as the same author, or the same application that was used to
create them? To be honest, I was almost certain that this was an issue of
partially downloaded attachments, and there are not too many options left
now to explain this issue.

I've been using a Mac Book version 10.4.11 with Entourage version 11.4.0
installed on it.

First thing is to update Office 2004...

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.5 Update released June 09, 2009. 59.2 MB.
This is a combo updater and contains all previous updates!

When you select the file on the desktop, do a Get Info on it. Compare that
with a .pdf that you can open.

If you drag the pdf on the desktop to Preview, does it open?

Hi Diane

I've updated Office.

I've compare the same pdf and the version that i can open via the desktop is 64kb and the same pdf that was sent as an attachment via entourage which i cant open is only 16kb. it also appears faint in the attachment pane on entourage which would also suggest that the pdf attachment has an error.

If i drag the pdf on the desktop to preview it doesn't open.
