pen turning on

I used the pen with a desktop mouse (roller) a few times and then the pen
tool deactivated. How does "ONE" turn it on again? I like ONENOTE so far
but it has the usual MS problem of doing things without my permission.

There is a button on the Standard toolbar which lets you choose the pen vs.
the Type/Selection Tool.
