Pending Check-in

Using Project Server 2007 and MS Project Professional 2007

My team is in the process of implementing Project Server and we have had
repeated problems with files failing to check in. When anyone, including the
person the file is checked out to, tries to open the file again they can only
get a read only copy. In the File Open dialog the Cache Status is Checkin
Pending.

As an admin, I can go in PWA and force the check in, but this is very
inconvient for everyone involved. Is there a way that the person the file is
checked out to can force the check in without involving an admin? I have one
file that is pending from it's initial check in and doesn't even show up in
PWA, so I can't force that one.

Thanks in advance
Tom

First is the standard, get upgraded to SP1 and the Cumulative Updates as the
original OOTB product had issues when using the "X" in the upper right to
close as opposed to using File Close Exit from the menu.

Second is to pay attention to messages when closing, do you want to Save and
do you want to Check In, this is a new dialog box, if you hit Cancel you will
still have project checked out.

Third, watch the Queue and make sure these are getting the proper steps
completed. Are these projects that while you just exit Pro and drop the
session, while it is processing the files, you quickly open Pro and want to
apply that change you forgot about.

Fourth, is the cache issue, make sure they go to Tools, Local Project Cache,
Cleanup Cache, and have users Remove the offending projects.

Last, yes, via the last command or on PWA in Project Center, they can try to
check in their projects from the menu on bottom left side before contacting
Admin.

Tom, I apologize, need to clarify, in 2007, PWA, Project Center, the PM uses
the Go To menu item and from the drop down selects Check in my projects.

Thanks Sean, this got me most of the way there. To clarify, if a file winds
up in a checking pending state, no matter how it got there, the only way for
someone to complete the checkin is through PWA. Correct?

I still have the issue that 2 files that got into this state on their
initial checkin and do not show up in the Project Center or the Force
Check-in page. They do however show up in the open file dialog and can only
be opened read-only. How do I recover these files?

Thanks

If the PM's cache got corrupted you need to delete the MPC, so you need to
have the PM navigate on their computer to C:\Documents and
Settings\PM Name\Application Data\Microsoft\MS Project\Cache\GUID Folder and
delete the MPC File for that project or the whole folder, as it will then
get recreated.

Tom,

It sounds like Sean has solved your problem. I did want to let you know
you are not alone. When I first installed PS 2007, I had to re-train our PM's
to make sure they closed any project they opened in Project Pro 2007
(desktop) and ensure they checked them back in. Often, the PM would close the
application, or shut down the system, etc. This tended to leave the project
"hanging". Once they understood that properly closing a project meant that
the pop up window prompted them to check it in, they were fine.
Once the PM's understood what to do, the problem went away.

I'm running Project Pro 2007 on Windows Vista. I have searched my entire
computer and there is no .mpc file anywhere on the system. I did find one on
the server, global(1).mpc, and deleted it.

I went back into Project and selected File/Open. The file still showed as
checkin pending. I selected Retrieve the list of all projects... to refresh
the view. In the resulting window the file says it is not checked out, but
when I try to open it I get a message there is a checkin still pending.

I went into WPA/Project Center and selected Go To/Check in my projects. On
the resulting my project does not show up in the list of projects checked out.

I rebooted both the Server and my local machine and the problem still
remains. Any ideas? Is my Project Server installation corrupted possibly?

I was very careful to save and publish the file. Then when I closed
Project, I selected OK when it asked me if I wanted to checkin my project.

Thanks
