katiedee asked:
1. "what is the problem"
The recipients do not have the same software application/version
with which you created the file that you attached.
2. "how do I overcome it?"
a. don't send files to people who do *not* have the same software
application/version that you have
b. at your end, use "save as" to put the file in a format that
others can handle
c. tell the recipients to buy the same software
application/version that you have
d. if you are taking about MS Office 2007 files,
have the recipients obtain and install the free file
viewers.

With which extension are you sending your attachments with. Describe the steps that you use to send the attachment. Sending it in HTML,Rich Text ? Have you tried sending in Plain Txt? What happens if you do

I suspect that the OP doesn't realise that office 2007 has changed the
format of documents - there is nothing in 2007 that tells you that unless
you do "Save As"...

You can do a few different things, but the most reliable is for you to save
your files in the "97-2003" format.

For example, open Word. Type some text on a page and click the Office
Button. Click the small arrow next to "save as" (or just hover over "save
as" with your mouse), which opens a flyout list on the right. Choose Word
97-2003 document. The Save As dialog box opens.

Notice that "Word 97-2003 Document" is listed in the "save as type" box.
Just so you know, if you were to just click Office Button | Save As in the
step above, it would open this same dialog box and you could just choose
"Word 97-2003 Document" in the "save as type" box yourself.

Name your document and click Save.

Now people using previous versions of Office applications or the free
Viewers will be able to open and view and edit your files.
