performance issue when linking to Resource Pool

Hi,
I've built a system based on MS Project Pro and SQL Server 2000 SP3 (not
Project Server!). The server is in London, some of the users are in New York.
The transatlantic link has an 85ms latency and uses 10 hops.

The performance from New York is acceptable, except when linking a project
to the Resource Pool. The process of opening the Pool read/write, linking the
sharer to it, saving the pool and then re-opening it Read Only takes over a
minute and this is not acceptable to the user.

Assuming that I cannot change the software used, or the use of a central
resource pool, does anyone have any thoughts on what I can try next?

Regards,
Tom

You risk corruptions saving over a WAN like that. The quickest performance
will come by using Terminal Services.

Project Server 2007 when it comes out will be even better. It has a new
caching system that means when you open a file, it only downloads the
changes. The caching is part of Project Server.

Thanks Rod. I saw 2007 at the conference in Munich and it certainly looked
like they'd really improved the performance (well, they had to didn't they?).

I'm not familiar with Terminal Services yet. I will be soon. My current
solution (which works!) is for the guys in NY to XP Remote Desktop into a few
old PC's situated (and connected to the network) in London. These "slave"
PC's are just running Project, and because the exchange with SQL Server gets
done locally, the only data passing London-NY is screen data through Remote
Desktop. It works a treat (and is a cheap and quick solutionl, because there
are always plenty of old PC's lying around....)

Does terminal services offer an even better solution?

Regards,
Tom

Remote desktop is a single user Terminal Services. With TS users (limited
only by hardware) can log in to the TS Server and run Project Professional.
Again the transfer from Project Prof to Project Server is then local.
