Just a guess, Peter, but getting rid of the ruler may not work unless it is
done so as to effect the change in your defaul template (and you only create
new docs from that template).
If you work from a document (doc_with_ruler) that was created using the
template (default_template_pre_removal_of_ruler), doc_with_ruler will still
show the ruler even though you changed the template.
If you change doc_with_ruler to doc_without_ruler but don't change the
defaul template, the default temp will still show the ruler and any docs
created from the template will still show the ruler.
I'll bet that if you systematically went thru all the Word docs on your disk
you would still find some without a rule and some with. Maybe the default
template is even still showing the ruler . . . .
One way around this would be to place a shortcut on your toolbar that always
opens a new document with the latest and greatest version of the template.
I suspect your problem is occurring because you create new docs by editing
an existing doc (base_doc) and then "saving as" base_doc_modified. Thus,
you'll always be stuck with a doc that has the features of the template that
existed at the time the doc was created (_and_ the features that the base
doc has as a result of futher mods made to it by you).
Sometimes this is a good thing because the default template needs to be left
behind when you want to create special formatting for particular projects.
Word, I believe, correctly does not inflict each and every change to the
default template on all docs created from it in the past. The template just
applies to docs created from it from that moment forward. In fact, I am
constantly amazed at the degree to which formatting choices I made right
after installation of Word on my computer still show up.
I think there are utilities that exist to modify or eliminate metadata in
all your Word files. Perhaps there is one to apply the current template to
all docs you stored on your hard drive.
