permission denied opening a excel file?

I loaded a new, patched, macbook pro with 10.5.4 (whatever the most
current is) and microsoft office 2008 for the mac. Yesterday the user
on this laptop opened an excel file on a windows 2003 server using a
domain account without error. Today the same user and the same domain
account is trying to open the same file and receives a 'permission
denied' message. In the finder I can duplicate/clone this file, and
delete the file, without error. I can also copy the original file to
the local desktop and open the file with mac excel.

Since I can modify the file through the finder this seems like a
microsoft office excel on the mac issue. Any ideas on this? How do I
fix this?

The 'check for updates' menu option in 'help' says no updates are
available. About Excel says the version is 12.1.2.

Did you repair disk permissions after installing Office/applying the update?

I have permissions to apply the updates (no errors), the account is an
admin on the mac box, and from the mac finder I could both duplicate
the original file (no errors), delete the duplicate file (no errors),
and change the name of the original file (no errors).

I've looked at the permissions on the windows 2003 server box where
the file is physically and the user has full permissions to the file
and to the directory containing the file.

I'm not sure what to try next...

Hi Mike -

I'm referring to running the Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions routine.
It's something that needs to be done after any OS X or application updates
as well as other software installs.

I forgot about that program. I'll run that on the user's laptop and
report back.

I ran the disk verification program this morning and fixed permissions
in printer devices (the only permissions that reported as wrong). Now
the user can open the file that started this question, but can't open
a file from a Windows XP share. The Windows XP share reports the same
permission denied error.

What do I try next?
