PERPLEXING TEMPORARY LOSS OF SENT MESSAGES WITH ENTOURAGE 2008

Email Client: imap

Hi, I looked hard for an answer that fitted this scenario and cannot find one. Also I am aware of different views/flags that can hide messages and also the fact one sometimes needs a search to locate an email.

I am seeing this a lot and wondered if anyone else recognized the behavior, and how it can be prevented or fixed...

What happens is I write an email and send... no problem, it goes out OK and gets there. BUT sometimes I just want to check back and see what I said in a given email. I go to where it should be and... I can't find the sent email anywhere.

Yes I have done all of teh tricks exhaustively -flags, views, searches, close/reopen, reboot... no its gone... even if I search on unique words in the email, the mail I sent cannot be found... and yes, I have got "retain a copy" checked yes in preferences.

Its a real problem as sometimes its urgent to refer to a past email and...its gone.

But then amazingly they turn up later...can't say when, not predictable. This drives me nuts as I cant control the behavior.

I just switched from Outlook 2003 on the PC and in that I knew where I stood - there was always a copy in the sent items list.

I really need to get this fixed, and was wondering if anyone else on the forum is seeing similar behavior. Why can't I just see all emails all the time? Why that perplexing temporary los of sent messages?

Many thanks

Ed

If you have access to your account through a webmail portal then see if
your messages are on your server there. You may need to right-click your
Sent Items folder for your IMAP account and select "Repair Message
List". Be sure to copy your messages to a folder under "On My Computer"
as a backup.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Bill for answer...

I still don't ***understand*** why messages disappear. Why can't they just be left in the Sent folder like in Outlook? Why is a REPAIR necessary - surely a client can be designed that does not need routine repair?

many thanks

Why is a REPAIR necessary - surely a client can be designed that does not
need routine repair?

Repair in this case means to update.

Unless you have a rule to move sent mail, it should all be in the Sent
folder for your Exchange account.

POP mail goes to the folders "On My Computer" Sent folder.

I'd imagine if anyone *did* understand then the problem would be fixed.
Entourage is made to work with a set of IMAP specs, which are suppose to
be standard. However, not everyone implements a standard the same way.
The problems could be due to different interpretations of a standard or
it could simply be that someone on either side is not following the
standard. It could possibly be completely outside the realm of the
client and server and actually be due to network protocol problems or
something else.

I know that with the Entourage developers, one of their goals is to "do
no damage". For example, if you receive a message and Entourage has a
problem with it, its fall-back mechanism may be to simply stop working
and let you deal with it manually rather than trying to delete it or
risk damaging it while trying to fix it. You may certainly want that
message.

If if if... I'm sure the possibilities for why this happens are
numerous, but my assumption (and that's all it is) is that Entourage is
taking the path of "do no damage" when you see this happen.
