Persistent Reading Layout

I've seen this question posted but it had no answer, that I could find.
Is there a way to permanently turn off Reading Layout when opening a
Word document that was an Outlook attachment? I have already turned off
"Allow opening in Reading Layout" several times. I once found a
registry hack and tried that - no success.

This is a customer's (high level manager, thank you) machine and I have
watched and performed the normal method to turn off Reading Layout
many, many times. In spite of these attempts the fool feature turns
itself back on EVERY TIME! ARRRGGGGH!

I followed the directions in the Help file for permanently turning it off.

a.. Prevent reading layout view from opening automatically when you receive
a Word document in e-mail: On the Tools menu, click Options, click the
General tab, and then clear the Allow starting in Reading Layout check box.

I know you said you tried this but it worked for me.

If however the document sent was in reading layout form when saved, then
that is what you will get when you open it. Also any word documents that
were opened in reading layout and then saved to disk will open in the same
reading layout format.

That unfortunately doesn't work for everyone, at least not permanently. I
had this annoying problem for months, and it seemed as if nothing I tried
would work, but finally a solution was offered and it works! You might want
to refer to the thread that began on December 3 called Reading Layout View
in the microsoft.public.word.docmanagement newsgroup to see various
solutions and the one that worked in my case. Good luck.
