Personal Folder Backup browser doesn't work

I have two machines with Windows XP Pro 2002 and Office XP Pro. I just
installed the MS Outlook Personal Folders Backup. On one machine I am able
to browse to any location I want to save the backups, but on the other
machine the browse function is grayed out. It is set for the default
location, where the original Outlook pst files are locationed, but I want to
save the backups to my net drive, in case the drive on my machine crashes.

By the way, I just had a wierd thing happen today. Maybe someone can
explain it. When I tried to open Outlook today I get a MS Visual C++ Runtime
Error. Program: C:\... OUTLOOK.EXE abnormal program termination. In tried
to deal with it I discovered that my outlook.pst file, which had been huge,
was now 0 KB. Later I got a message saying that it wasn't even "a personal
folders file." So I had to replace the file with an old backup that I had
made manually. I lost lots of e-mail. That is why I'm working on setting up
this Personal Folders Backup program.

That is probably why things are not working correctly now as well. Do you
have a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook and/or does script
blocking/checking? Disable this integration to begin with; it doesn't add an
extra level of security anyway. I cannot tell from here if the settings were
corrupted to begin with but you might want to set up a new mail profile to
check it with. If everything works as it should with the new profile but not
the old you can delete the old one. To set up a new mail profile see;

I am using Avast! for virus scanning. Are you asking me to disable the
integration by going to Toos>Options>Other>Advanced Options>Add-in Manager?
I went there an unchecked the Avast! 4 that was there. But I still am not
able to browse for another location for the file backup location. It remains
grayed out.

I'll work on a new profile tomorrow.

Any other ideas?

That is the dirty way of disabling the integration and your virus scanner
could automatically re-enable it. Better is to disable the integration from
within the control panel of your virus scanner.

"It remains grayed out."
Yes, as I never stated this was meant to solve the issue but more a likely
cause of the corruption that leads to the fact that it is now greyed out.
Recreating the profile might actually solve it. You might want to check the
Event Viewer to find out more about your abnormal program termination.

I'm not sure exactly what I am looking for in order to disable the
integration in Avast. Outlook/Exchange is listed as an "installed provider"
in Avast. Do I want to "terminte" the whole provider? Under a "customise"
button I find tabs for: Scaner, Inbound mail, Outbound mail, Signatures,
Virus storing, Advanced, Heuristics, and Advanced Heuristics -- all with lots
of settings. If I "terminate" the whole provider won't I lose my virus
scanning protection?

I created new profiles. They worked fine, so I deleted the old profiles.
Now I am able to select a new location for the personal folders file backups.
Wonderful. Thanks.

However, both before and after creating the new profiles a new problem
developed last night, and, again, is still there with new profiles and the
old profiles deleted, and that is, I cannot sent e-mail now. I get the
follwoing message:

"Task '1. gokmail - callisons - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC7D) : 'Your
outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL-secured connections. If
SSL-secured connections have worked in the past, contact your server
administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'"

I have checked and double checked all of my settings and everthing appears
right. My wife's laptop, with the same settings is working fine. I've set
her laptop right next to my monitor and checked everything thoroughly, but
still I cannot send e-mail. Any ideas what to do?

I don't know how Avast works as I don't use their products. Only disable its
integration with Outlook not the entire scanner; default Outlook security
and the on-access scanner are sufficient.

To me the error sounds pretty clear; you've configured the account for SSL
which the mail server does not support.
In your account settings press More Settings-> tab Advanced-> untick the SSL
option and set the SMTP dropdown to none.

If it still doesn't work then contact your ISP for the exact settings.

Hmmm. The server is Hushmail and it does allow SSL, in fact, requires SSL.
My laptop is configured exactly the same way and is working fine. I've got
the settings from Hushmail and everything is correct.

I feel stuck and don't know what to do. Any ideas?
