There are multiple files, each named "personal.xls" in various folder
on my computer. To my knowledge, I have not created any of them. I
"personal.xls" file I have gotten unknowingly from the internet o
something Excel (I have Excel 97)? I would not bother with it excep
that it is causing Excel to unnecessarily load another file when th
program starts up

KZ, you have most probably been infected with a macro virus. Personal.xls is used to load macros when you start Excel, and if you have not created them, they probably are the result of a virus
Check out http://www.stanford.edu/~security/Advisories/97-0007.html for more information
Also check out http://www.cbi.msstate.edu/cobi/sac/tickmarks.html to see one example of how personal.xls can be used in the field..
Good luck

I'd bet that you upgraded through various versions of excel.

and every once in awhile you tried tools|macro|record new macro..

If you're sure that you don't want them, just delete them.

If you're unsure, move each into a backup folder (give a nice unique name after
you paste the file into that folder).

If something breaks that shouldn't have, you'll just have to find the correct
personal.xls and put it where it belongs.

One way to find that correct location:

Start excel
hit alt-f11 (to get to the vbe, where macros live)
hit ctrl-g (to see the immediate window)

copy this and paste it in:

?application.StartupPath

I get this using win98 and xl2002:
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART
