personal.xls will not load when Excel starts

All of a sudden my personal.xls does not load when I start Excel.
What's strange is that if I have a copy of personal.xls (called: "Copy
of Personal.xls") in my XLSTART folder, the "Copy of Personal.xls" file
does open.

Another problem is that when I assign a macro, stored in this "Copy of
Personal.xls" file, to a button, the macro does not run and the Assign
Macro dialog box opens (as if there is no macro assigned tothe
button).

I uninstalled and then reinstalled Office, but this did not help.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ben

Are you using xl2002 or xl2003?

If yes, try Help|About MS Excel.
click on that button in the lower right hand corner.
Is your personal.xl* file disabled?

If it is, you answered a prompt to disable it excel thought it had trouble
opening it.

If excel was really correct and your personal.xl* file is damaged, you may have
to use that backup (renamed nicely, of course).

Dave,
THANKS VERY MUCH! Your suggestion fixed my problem. I did not know
about the "Disabled Items" feature in Office XP. Somehow it got set to
disabled.

Thanks again,

Ben
