I have saved a personal.xls in win\appdata\ms\excel where my xlstart is, but
when I open xl it does not come up with this worksheet, like it says in
dummies.com?

I recorded a macro in it under personal macros and that did make any
difference either. Do you think I chose the wrong directory - it is where
xlstart is.

xlstart is also in another directory progs\mso\ - do you think I should
have saved it there?

How about opening excel, recording a macro, anything will do then close
excel and do a search for the personal.xls you can then see which has the
newest date / time and where it is.
Normally you do not choose where it is saved, it will always come up from
the same place, just make sure that when you have recorded a macro that you
do save the personal.xls ( when you exit excel it will ask you anyway if you
do not do it earlier).
