PERT Entry Optimistic, Expected, and Pessimistic "Gantt" Charts

D

DanG

When using the PERT Entry Toolbar, the "Gantt" charts on the right side of
the screen show the correct durations for each of the tasks for the
Optimistic, Expected, and Pessimistic views. They also show the
(Finish-to-Start) predecessor relationship of the tasks.

However, it doesn't show the Optimistic, Expected, or Pessimistic schedules
- all the tasks in each view start at the project start date and last for
whatever their duration is. Why is that, and can I change it?

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Jim,

That's what I was doing. The chart appears, but has the correct durations
for each task, and it even had the dependency arrows correct. But since every
task starts on the same day, the predecessors are not really showing up in
the schedule, making the Gantt meaningless. All work is done in parallel and
the project duration is equal to the longest task duration.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi JulieS,

I am using Microsoft Project Standard 2003, (11.2.2005.1801.15) SP2

Is this a known bug? hopefully with a fix?

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

No known bug that I am aware of. I just did a very quick test in
Project 2003 Professional with SP-2 installed. All appears to work
well.

Do you see different start/finish dates in the Opt Start/Opt Finish, Exp
Start/Exp Finish fields?

As Jim noted, you did click the Calculate PERT button yes?

Just have to ask -- is calculation (Tools > Options, Calculation) set to
Automatic?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Jim,

I had selected the PERT Calculator.

However, after calculating the PERT Entries, I assigned the resources and
set the predecessors. When I added the Predecessor column in the PERT Entry
view, it showed the predecessors correctly in the table and the Gantt chart.
It didn't have the correct dates.

The fix was to Click the PERT Calculator a second time. Re-running the
calculator applied the changes made in the Gantt view to the PERT Entry view.
Although the predecessors were correct in the PERT view, the impact they had
on the schedule wasn't there until the second calculate PERT selection.

Thanks for the advice. Now I know to recalculate PERT when working outside
the view.

Best regards,

Dan

Hi Julie,
Thanks for the reply. I re-read Jim's post and tried recalculating the PERT
Entry form. This enabled it to apply the rest of the changes made in the
Gantt view. Your replies combined with Jim's solved my problem.

Thanks,

Dan
