Pesky Moving Continuous Section Break

K

Kathryn Miller

I'm working on a large doc with multiple chapters divided
by section breaks -- the next page type. Somehow several
continuous section breaks are appearing in the doc and
when I try to delete them, they just move to the previous
chapter.

I think the continuous section breaks are introduced by
the Index I created, but now they are various places in
the doc, tho always at the end of a chapter.

A posting on 2/28/04 message said to remove the Previous
Section flag on the last chapter. I've tried that, but it
didn't work.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Hi Kathryn

You are being misled by the way the section breaks are shown - a section
break contains the information for the *prior* section, including the
section start information. But information Word shows in the section break
marker (e.g. '(Continuous)' ) tells you about the start of the *next*
section.

Inserting an Index creates continuous section breaks needed to preserve the
column formatting - you can generally just leave well alone.

To understand better what is going on and how to control it, see
