I have discovered an interesting problem with Microsoft Outlook 2002
(build 10.4608.4219) SP2. In particular, Outlook is creating a
"phantom" message when one edits a message. For example, let's
presume that I get a message with the subject of Foo, and it contains
a Word document as an attachment.
Now, I open said message and remove the attachment. With IMAP, it
marks the original message for deletion, and it creates a new message
with everything the same, except there is now no attachment. This is
expected behavior.
The steps below are what one can do to recreate the problem:
1) view message (double-click)
2) delete message attachment
3) save changes (original marked for deletion -- two copies of smaller
message
appear, one above & one below original)
4) purge (original message purged -- two smaller copies remain)
5) delete top copy (bottom copy marked for deletion, top copy remains)
6) purge (bottom copy deleted, top copy remains)
7) change to alternate folder
8) return to INBOX (remaining message gone)
I am working with the developers of the mail server we use to get a
solution, but in working with them we have uncovered a more
interesting development. Apparently, this problem does not manifest
itself with Outlook 2002 (build 10.4219.4219) SP2. Thus, it would
appear that a post-SP2 patch has introduced this behavior.
I have packet traces for review, and I can provide a test account for
one to confirm this behavior. Essentially, I am trying to track down
the problem so that the developers can address the problem, if
possible, with their software.
Thanks in advance. To contact me directly, remove the glue.nospam
