Phone number doesn't auto format

When I enter any phone number into any of the contact
fields, the number doesn't auto format. If I put in
3335551212 it saves it exactly as I entered it rather
than putting parentheses around the area code. If I
click on the check phone number button, it correctly
identifies United Status, but leaves the entire string of
numbers in the local number field and doesn't bring the
first 3 into the area code field.

Any suggestions?
