Phonetic symbols

I am working in a Word document that was sent to me by a client who
works on PC. They are using Arial font. They are able to see phonetic
symbols for long vowels, etc. but they only show up as underlines on my
computer. I am on Mac OS X.2.8, and Word X. Does anyone know what the
problem might be?

PC Arial has a wonderfully complete Unicode set, including phonetics.
It will work on a Mac, but not with Word X. You need Word 2004 for
Unicode.

As a stopgap, see if you can persuade the client to send you an RTF.
Then read it with TextEdit.
