Photo editor stopped opening jpeg files

Photo Editor stopped opening jpeg photos. The thumbnail preview shows, but
the file will not open. Files that I had just opened and closed will not
open again. Restarting did not help. The photos can be opened with other
programs, but that is tedious because I have to select the other program with
each photo, instead of being able to open it automatically with a double
click.

Do you get an error message of any kind?

I think there used to be a KB article about this, but durned if I can find
it.
