photo fades (not fade into background color)

I am working on a self-running PPT that will manily consist
of photos and background narration. I would like the
photos to fade into and out of one another throughout the
presentation.

We did this before using iMovie, but we're hoping that by
doing it in PowerPoint we'll have a more easily-editable
final project (and hopefully the editing will take less time).

So far, experimenting with PowerPoint animations has only
allowed me to fade into and out of the background, which
leaves a few seconds of black or white between each shot.
I want the images to fade into and out of each other. Is
that possible? Am I asking too much of a presentation program?

Let's start with the basics: Which version of PPT are you using? Are the
photos on top of one another or in different locations on the slides?

If the photos are on top of one another and you are using PPT 2002 or later,
you can mess with the animation timeline to get the effect you want. The
basic process is:
Animate each photo to enter and exit with fade animations. Stack the photos
on the slide from last to first. Rearrange the animations so that the top
picture comes in, then the second picture comes in behind it, then the top
picture fades out. Play around with the timing and you should get the effect
you want.

If you are using one of the older versions of PPT, this is much harder to
do. I recommend that if you are trying to do these kinds of effects, you
upgrade to one of the more recent versions. It will save you many hours and
headaches. (My two cents, take or leave as desired.)

I'm running MS PowerPoint 2003 on an XP machine. The plan
was to have one photo per slide that takes up most or all
of the screen. I want the fade to be a transition from
slide to slide.

It sounds like the effect you're suggesting is for multiple
photos on the same slide, right?

Yes - In general, what I suggested is for multiple photos on the same
slide. If you want one photo per slide, then you can fake it by putting the
previous slide's photo over the current slide's photo and doing the
animation there. (In effect one slide you want to show on each slide, but
two actual photos on the slide - the previous one and the current one.) this
allows the effect to work without putting all the photos on one slide.

If you are attempting a project like this with more than a few photos, I
strongly recommend you look into Shyam Pillai's Image Importer and Animation
Carbon add-ins. They will make life much easier. You can find information on

Similar to what Kathy has suggested, the easiest is to place all the
images on one slide, on top of each other, in order you wish to see
them. Then for each image just add a custom exit animation of fade. As
each image fades out, the underneath will appear, as a dissolve. In
the dialogue box for fade time, you can type in a number for a longer
fade than the suggested presets.

However, you also mention background narration. If you want the
dissolves timed to the narration, you made need to use separate
slides, using the trick Kathy suggested.

Also, if you don't need longer dissolve times, try the fade smoothly
transition. This might be easier to use.

But precise timing of slides to a soundtrack is something PPT is not
good at. One trick is to break the narration into separate files and
have each sound play with its slide transition. You may also find it
easier to use a slide show program, such as you already have tried.
