Photo inserted via MailMerge prints fullheight but not print full width.

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I make photo notecard using MailMerge to keep image, caption, etc. together. Suddenly Word prints all text correctly but shrinks the photo's aspect ratio and left-justifies the image. It's particularly puzzling because print preview shows the image at full width. How is this possible?

An embedded image will resize to fit the space it is inserted into.

What are you inserting the picture into? A Table? A Text Box? A Frame?

Cheers

Thanks, John. The image goes into a table cell.

The photo and text cells all have the same width in the same column. The text previews and prints correctly--centered in the cell. The photo, though, doesn't print full cell width in spite of previewing full width.

How are you inserting those pictures?

If you use Insert>Picture>From File and make sure that "Wrapping" is set to
Inline with Text, it will probably work.

If you set the wrapping to anything else, or if you paste the picture in, it
may not work.

Hope this helps

John, I drag the place holder into the cell from the data table definition rather than pasting images individually for each different card. The image occupies the cell alone--no text or anything else to wrap. Thanks for trying. I still can't get my mind around the fact that the image previews correctly but prints with the image squeezed toward the left edge of the cell.

Best regards,
Fred

John, the system did some interpreting of the previous, taking away the "" I put between the hairpins.

One more try...I had "Image" between double hairpins to denote placeholder name.

Hi Fred:

That's my point: there doesn't have to be any text in the cell, the question
is whether the image is being treated as text or as a floating object.

If the picture wrapping property is set to "inline with text" it will
acquire its placement properties from the cell. Anything else leads to
mysterious things happening.

Right-click the image and correct its wrapping property if you must insert
them by dragging. Otherwise, use Insert>Picture>From file... And Word
should insert them "inline with text" automatically.

Hope this helps

Thanks, John, I understand better now. To check on wrapping, I right-clicked the cell with the image and found "inline with text" already checked.

How do I tell the MailMerge main document which data item goes into the cell if I don't drag the placeholder?

Sorry, I thought you said you were dragging the image. Dragging the
placeholder is fine.

Now, the image will be placed by the formatting for the table cell, so
correct that to get it into the correct place.

Note: Hop into Table Properties and ensure that you have not specified
"Specify Row Height". If you fix the row height, then the cell can't expand
to accommodate the picture. Same with the column: turn off "Preferred
Width". And in the Table tab, make sure you have turned off "Preferred
Width" there too.

You either have to have all the pictures exactly the same size and size the
table accordingly, or you have to leave the table fully automatic to enable
it to resize for each picture.

Hope this helps

John. you've thrown me a lifeline! Making it automatic did the trick. [I specified dimensions when I created the files years ago in Word for Windows...it seemed the only way to control spacing for an aesthetic whole.]

Many thanks from me AND my clients,
Fred
