Photo lost on Microsoft Office Picture Manager

I was trying to send a picture to a friend by email and the photo has
disappeared from my pictures and cannot now be opened using Microsoft Office
Picture Manager. It comes up saying that it is now a Read Only file and that
the file has no camera qualities. Is it possible to re-instate the picture or
is it lost forever?
