Photo Merge

I'm trying to get a photo to merge into a newsletter. I've crawled all over
these posts and the online help and still have no idea why I'm not getting
the pictures to display from the files. I've tried several different ways
and am not sure what the problem is. The only way I've been able to make
this work is liking to pictures on a web page. While this works for a
solution it is far from the best option.

This will be an assignment for future teachers on how to construct
newslettter for their classrooms. There are lots of issues with posting the
'student' pictures on the web that make it not at all the best option. We
previously have done this assignment in MS Word but would like to move to
something a little more desktop publishing focused. If I can't get the
pictures to show up in the merged document then it will be back to Word,
where this works without an issue.

I'm not looking for a response such as try here
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HP010380451033.aspx
I've been there, tried all of those things, had others in the office try
them with the same result, the picture box show up in the merged field but
not the picture, unless we point to a photo on the web.

The URL you posted has all your answers. You will have to add the picture URLs
to your database.
Below is the explanation from the Microsoft web page

Open the data source file that contains the information you want to update; for
example, a Microsoft Excel worksheet.

Create a new column or data field for each picture type that you want to
include.

Type a unique column heading or name for each picture data field that you
create.

These names will become the names for the merge fields that you select when you
create your mail merge or catalog merge. You should make sure that each name is
unique so that you can determine which pictures each field represents.

In each of the picture fields for each of the records in your data source, do
one of the following:
If you plan to save your picture files and your data source in the same folder,
type the file name for the relevant picture. For example: firstphoto.jpg.

If the pictures files will be located in a different folder from the data
source, type the path for the relevant picture. For example: C:\Documents and
Settings\Username\My Documents\My Pictures\Catalog Project\firstphoto.jpg.

When you have finished adding picture information to your data source, save your
updated data source file.

Note: You can merge only one picture per merge field. If you want to merge
multiple pictures for each record in your data source, you will need to add
another column or data field per record to your data source for each of the
pictures that you want to use.

I've done all that and still no pictures. I'm MOUS certified so I have a
pretty firm grasp on the mail merge concept and what I'm trying to
accomplish. I have followed the directions and still have no idea what the
problem is. So I guess its to MS Word if there is no explaination beyond
what I've already found.

Yet it works by linking to pix on the web?
Maybe a problem with the data source path?
Are you doing this on a network?

Maybe a work-around would be to put the pix on the web in a non-descript
folder with online links to it so it could not be found?

Just thinking.
