photo size in email

This may be a really silly question however; can anyone
tell me why a photo attached to an email comes through
HUGH!! So hugh one has to use the thumbs and the side
and botton of the screen to view sections of the photo.

Because the person who sent it didn't shrink the file down to a manageable
size.
