Photo Slide Shows in Front Page 2003

I presently use Front Page 2003 to create photo galleries.
Is there an add-in or other method for creating a slide show which
sequentially displays each of the photos in a given web directory/folder?
I would like a visitor to such a web page to be able to click on an icon to
initiate a slide show rather than having to manually view each and every
photo in a photo gallery.

Check out JAlbum its free, highly customizable and it's albums are easily
incorporated into FP.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if a JAlbum slideshow added to my Front
Page generated website uses the photo files already stored on my site (as
opposed to creating a whole new "slideshow file" which would double the disk
space requirements)?

No, because you generate the JAlbum outside of FP first.

But, what would be the reason to duplicate anyway? Just take the images you
have online offline and move to a folder outside of FP, then generate your
new album(s). Then import the newly generated JAlbum folder into FP and
Publish.

You certainly can allow users to see either a single image or a slide show.

I haven't used JAlbum -I did it with JS.

You could make up a powerpoint presentation; make a link to the PPT file;
have the viewer as a download from microsoft.com.

Otherwise there are utilities around that convert PPT to Flash (which a user
may be more likely to have rather than Powerpoint or the PPT viewer).

Alternatively there's javascripts around that make images "transition"
between one another.

You could also display your images as thumbnails, which link to the big
image, that way the user can randomly choose the image rather than
sequentially view all of them.

Not sure I understand. But, JAlbum has many skins - one of them is likely to
do what you want.

JS refers to Java Script? Being a novice, I am not familiar with how one
applies a Java Script to a web page (much less being able to originate a
script).

unfamiliar with how to apply Java Scripts. I see a number of scripts posted
that do exactly what I'm trying to do. But I'm not sure how to apply them to
my page. Is it possible to reference a directory of photos with a wildcard
such that the script slideshow sequences through all of them or do I need to
explicity reference each photo file name in the script?

Which program are you referring to? Most will do the work for you once you
have made a folder of images, optimized them etc.... all in one folder is
best). For instance, work with JAlbum outside of FP, then when finished
IMPORT the whole folder into FP and link appropriately.

One script that I was looking at was the Carousel Slideshow II shown on:

I have an existing website that has many pages of photo collections. Each
web page presently has a photo gallery for its assigned photos. The photos
for each web page are all in their own subdirectory (each page maps to a
unique subdirectory of photos).

I was envisioning envisioning applying individual instantiations of the
above script to each web page. Being new to Java scripts I wasn't sure what
I would modify in the script to point to my subdirectory of photos?

I thought of doing something like that, but I'm trying to avoid adding to
the file storage requirements. A flash file with a slideshow of all my
photos in addition to retaining my existing photo gallery would take a lot of
storage space. I think I will need to implement a script that accesses my
existing photo files and presents them in an automated slideshow.

Have any gievn you what you want or do you want to pursue my method ?

It takes a little bit of setting up, which can be daunting for newcomers.
I can try to simplify it as much as possible and post the code here (or
refer you to the code on my site).

Let me know. I am happy to do what is needed to get you going.

I personally would want to work that way. I'd choose a program that will
work with a selected folder of images, such as all of these:
http://www.eleanorstravels.com/australia05.htm done the same way when I got
home from a trip to Australia last March, made with the capabilities of
Ulead's Photo Explorer. Not fancy but easy, and in this case consistent.
I've used many other types of slide shows on my site. Poke around there
until you find a style you like ... and ask if you need to.

This is the code I use to start a slideshow
<input type="button" value="Start/Stop Slideshow"
onclick="auto()"/>

This starts at the first image/slide, and each 8 seconds moves to the next
until all have been displayed

Of course, there is a bit of code behind this simple call, but I think it
answers your direct question

The respondents have been great and they have given me a clear understanding
that I need to use something like a Java script to do what I want. I have
just tried implementing one using a script that was posted in one of the
references. In Front Page, I did

Insert / Web Component / Advanced Controls / Java Applet

and in the dialog box I set up a pointer to the Java Script I created in
Notepad.
When I run the page, I get a box where I inserted the Web Component and it
has an X in it. This is obviously not able to execute my script as I
expected. At the bottom of the web browser it gives the message

"exception: java.lang.NullPointerException."

Can you provide me any hints as to what I'm doing wrong?
