photographs in Word documents

Which version of Word are you using?

Mac Word doesn't have that function. You need a photo editor.

How do I lower the resolution (compress) photographs in Word documents?

Stuff or Zip the file containing the photos. Mac Word doesn't have the
ability to alter image resolution, which is a task that shouldn't be handled
by a Word processor anyway:) Graphics apps - including iPhoto & Photoshop
Elements - do a much better job. Finalize the images in terms of print
dimensions & resolution *before* inserting them into a doc - you'll be a
much happier camper in the long run.

Although I have other applications that can change the degree of
compression/resolution of images, I find ImageWell
(http://xtralean.com/IWOverview.html) an excellent application -- simple and
quick to use, and more controllable.
