Photos no longer viewable in Microsoft Word

I was using Microsoft Office Picture manager for the first time. When I
returned to Microsoft Word and opened a file with a photo in it I got the
following messge.

File Converaion - DSC 25474
Select the encoding that makes your document readable.

Even by rebooting I cannot return to normal use in office word. Text only
files are fine.
