Pic inserted into word does not show up - just black handles??

I have inserted a jpg into a word document but it does not show up, only the
black handles or black border, also I cannot active the format picture dialog
box to format it. All buttons on picture toolbar are inactive.
Think this may have happened since an auto update - any ideas?

On the View tab of Tools | Options, make sure that "Picture placeholders" is
NOT checked.
