picture disappears when resized or cropped

Hoping someone else has run across this problem and figured out how to fix it-
It's certainly a new one on me-
I have pasted a jpg image into a blank Word document. There is no text. I
can see the image just fine. I clicked in one corner and drug it out a bit
to enlarge it, still staying on the page and within the margins, and as soon
as I let go, it disappears. Same with cropping- if I click and drag to crop,
once i let it go, it's gone.
Help?
