the pictures in my word document are "locked" in the square layout.....I
change the layout to "in tight" but they always revert back to square...what
am I doing wrong?

Square and tight are very similar. It some cases you wouldn't notice any
difference. Can you change it to any of the other options?

I changed to "in front of text" and that worked....then I tried in tight
again and in once again it defaulted to "in line". I was trying to layer a
picture over a word shape box so there was an offset framing effect...when I
started the doc this was working well - both the pic and the shape were as
"in tight" with one in front, and one sent to bac. Then it all of a sudden
it switched to in line and I cannot overlap the shape and the picture

Tight is really to force text around a picture/shape, but close to it. If I
understand your problem correctly, I think you should insert the picture into
the rectangle rather than overlaying it. Draw a rectangle and select the
thickness you prefer, right-click and format autoshape. In the fill color box
go to the drop down box and select fill effects, then picture. Browse for
your picture and insert. For a really cool effect click on a shadow style in
the drawing toolbar. In the shadow settings you can choose the shadow color.
Does this help?
