Picture Manager slow to open

Did a Windows XP repair and it seems that Picture Manager is very slow to
open - no problems in other apps or on a really old machine running setup -
disk is totally defrag'd and clean - other office apps are fine. Excel and
Word take a 1/2 sec to load fully - picture manager takes at least 30 seconds

Has to have something to do with how many images the Picture Manager has to load.
